Surprised by beauty

We live on the Saskatchewan plains; some folks think there’s not much to see here. Yet there is beauty all around us. Most of it is close to the ground, so one has to keep his eyes open as he travels. Taking a walk on the open prairie is a way to discover beauty that is hidden from view as we whiz by in a car.

Today we saw an abundance of these beautiful flowers in the tall grass by the roadside. It is a Prairie Lily, lilium philadelphicum, and is Saskatchewan’s official floral emblem. As such, if you pick, cut, or dig one up, you risk a fine of $500.00. Bulbs are available from some commercial sources and they would make a splash in your home flower garden. They are hardy, but slow growing.
