My duty towards God

My wife was reading a novel yesterday and read me a portion about a lady who would fall on her knees several times during the day to remind God of his duty towards her. That struck pretty close to home: is that what my prayers sound like?

That prompted me to look up this item in the Anglican catechism that I studied 70 years ago.

My duty towards God is,
To believe in him, to fear him, and to love him, with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, and with all my strength;
To worship him, to give him thanks, to put my whole trust in him, to pray to him;
To honour his holy Name and his Word;
And to serve him truly all the days of my life.

Very succinct, very complete. The wording is much the same as what Thomas Cranmer wrote in 1540. They are a set of attitudes, not a set of rules, and those attitudes can only be formed and developed by the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart.

I'd love to hear what you think about this. Please leave a comment.
